Year after year, Evolution doesn't know what time it is
It's that time of the year again, the time of year where Congress decides we all need to change our clock, and like sheep, we all do. It's an annoyance, but not enough to take action against. It's also that time of year when the Evolution calendar doesn't know what time it is. I don't know why this is so hard for Evolution. My computer clock did the right thing two weeks ago, but Evolution didn't do it until this past Sunday, which was two weeks late. Checking the bug reports for Evolution, this is reported twice a year for the past several years. Writing programs that know the proper time really isn't that hard, so it continues to amaze me that Evolution can screw this up every time. The tricks to fix it from last year don't work with the latest version of Evolution, it ignorantly ignores all adjustments and insists on being off an hour. Oh well, at least it was only wrong for 2 weeks this year rather than 4 weeks like last year.

Evolution lost its mind
This seems to happen fairly regularly, Evolution will be running along happily, then it will just lose its mind. It suddenly won't be able to deal with the calendar, messages disappear, can't connect to the server, and so on.
This trick seems to clear up the problems pretty well, with no loss of data that I've noticed:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure evolution
After doing this, I had to step through the account set up wizard, but my .evolution directory seems to be untouched (I made a backup first, just in case).

Hardy Heron woes... Evolution, almost success!
A possible fix for this one... I ran across this excellent page:
http://mad-scientist.us/evolution.html
This gives instructions to easily download the latest Evolution code and build it from scratch. So far so good, I've had Evolution running for about an hour without error, which is about 59 minutes longer than I was able to run with the Ubuntu release version. The latest that shows up in synaptic is 2.22.1, using the nifty make file from the link above gets me 2.23.4. This version is considerably more stable than 2.22.1, at least so far.
heh... I feel like I'm running Gentoo again...!

Darn. About an hour and a half, and the Evolution calendar is having problems. So the "fix" of building from scratch helped some, but not completely.

After running the compiled-from-source version of Evolution, I can say that it is at least usable. I restarted it 3 times yesterday. The problem seems to be in the calendar rather than the email, although some messages were unavailable due to the 'lost connection to back-end process' error. I should mention I'm using Evolution to connect to an MS Exchange server.
