I might be at the end of the search for the perfect music player. Oddly enough, it's a movie player: mplayer. mplayer plays just about every video and audio format on the market today. It has a variety of GUI front-ends, but perhaps my favorite is the command-line interface. It fits really well with the file-based organization I have for my music. I tend to organize my music like this:
artist/
album/
track1
track2
...
So all I need to do from the command line is cd to a directory and enter 'mplayer *'. If I want to listen to multiple albums in a row, I cd into the artist directory, the 'mplayer */*'. Pause is the space bar. Skip a track is >. Can't get much more simple than that!

Nice. I didn't know mplayer worked on command line.
I've always used VLC, but recently I found SongBird which is really nice - if you can get over the overwhelming similarities to iTunes.
